Great question. Simply, it depends on what you want and the complexity of the design. A great design could cost a few hundred pounds or a few thousand. A better question is what do I want from a garden design? Answer this question and the question of cost changes dramatically.
A design empowers you to make informed decisions. You will have an input into the design from conception to conclusion and any designer using a computer aided design package can easily move or change elements from the original idea; a great designer knows that the design process is a discussion. It is useful to have an idea of your budget before you start the process. This will mean the end product will be affordable. Alternatively, it will then allow you decide how you will plan the installation.
A recent project had an agreed design to progress with, but the client wanted to do as much of the project as possible themselves. They also knew they didn’t have all the money for the project straight away. A site meeting was arranged with the sub-contractors, the client and myself, the designer. Various strategies were discussed, the end result, the brick edging for the lawns and paving would be installed first. This would allow our client to sort the lawns and flower beds himself. The paving will be laid later this year and the raised beds at the far end and the driveway will be installed at the beginning of next year.
How much does a garden design cost? In proportion to the total cost, usually between 5-10% of the total build, which is relatively inexpensive, considering it allows you to make informed choices and know exactly what you are going to have the pleasure of enjoying, at a pace you have planned and at a cost you can afford.
